Gala will be held in Portugal on 23 June

Under the High Patronage of the Presidency of the Portuguese Republic, the first edition of the European Private Hospital Awards, promoted by the European Union of Private Hospitals (UEHP) and the Portuguese Association of Private Hospitals (APHP), received 67 applications from 10 European countries. The winners will be announced on 23 June, in Lisbon, at Pateo da Galé.

The initiative, which counts with the technical support of EY, aims to award the top performing European private healthcare facilities in seven categories: „Best prevention initiative“, „Best patient-focused initiative“, „Greenest hospital in Europe“, „Model of clinical innovation“, „Most advanced hospital in Value-based Healthcare“, „Workplace excellence“ and „News coverage of the year“, a category that acknowledges the importance of health literacy and the correct transmission of information.

67 applications were received from private hospitals of 10 countries: Portugal, Italy, France, Spain, Switzerland, Poland, Austria, Germany, Romania and Greece. An independent international jury will oversee the evaluation process:

Brandon Mitchener – Health First Europe

Manuel Pizarro – Member of the European Parliament

Christian Egle – Ernst & Young

Mariano Votta – Active Citizenship Network

Tomas Cobo – General Council of Official Medical Colleges of Spain

Joaquim Cunha – Health Cluster Portugal

Felisbela Lopes / Clara Almeida Santos – Media Researchers

Considering the dynamism of the private hospital sector in Europe, the level of differentiation achieved, its leading positioning in terms of investment, management models, patient focus and clinical approaches, UEHP believes that it is fitting to annually award the most outstanding European private hospitals.

According to UEHP President, Dr. Paul Garassus, „in Europe today, there is a clear perception that private hospitals have enabled the improvement of citizens‘ access to care and have promoted innovation and efficiency“.

For Oscar Gaspar, President of APHP, the Gala to be held in Portugal is „an excellent opportunity to show what private hospitals do best in Europe „. On the other hand, „its taking place in Portugal is a matter of great satisfaction, since it represents the recognition that Portuguese private hospitals have always strived for excellence in the provision of hospital care“.

KEY FIGURES

Representing 90% of all national private hospitals, APHP, which celebrated 50 years of activity in 2021, supports the creation of a health system that embraces the characteristics of plurality of provision, competitiveness, efficiency and freedom of choice regarding health facilities. In 2022 it joined the International Hospital Federation (IHF), where Ministries of Health of various countries, national hospital associations, hospital groups and professional associations are represented.

In Portugal, considering the number of hospitals counted up to the end of 2021, most hospitals are private (129), with 12,000 beds, over 40,000 employees and a turnover of more than 2,300 million euros. Annually, Portuguese private hospitals carry out 1 million emergency consultations, 8.3 million specialty consultations and 220 000 surgeries.

In Europe, private hospitals (excluding those in the social area) represent 22% of the total hospital sector. UEHP represents more than 5,000 clinics and hospitals in 17 countries.
