Modern healthcare systems
Key Facts
The role of the private sector in modern healthcare systems is clear. The proportion of privately owned healthcare companies varies widely across European countries, with the interaction between public and private showing clear advantages. Most countries use the private sector in the healthcare industry to increase the quality and efficiency of the entire national healthcare system, promote innovation and ensure freedom of choice. In Austria, the market share by beds of non-public private providers is just over 10%*. In comparison, the share of private providers in Germany and Italy is around 30% and in France over 20%*.
Across Europe, the number of acute beds is falling in favor of outpatient and day clinic stays. This trend is being accelerated by innovations, telemedicine and new technologies.
A modern, highly effective healthcare system requires a clear commitment to diversity of ownership with a balanced share ratio. Transparency and comparability of the services and financing of all players in the healthcare industry and an increase in the effectiveness of the use of funds are also essential for this. The principle of equal remuneration for comparable services should be a matter of course.
