Private clinic Wehrle-Diakonissen celebrates 15,000th birth

15,000 babies in 30 years: The obstetrics team at the Wehrle-Diakonissen Private Clinic is celebrating a special milestone. Since the clinic opened in Salzburg-Aigen in 1994, 15,000 newborns have been accompanied at the start of their lives.

Little Mara Isabel was the 15,000th baby to see the light of day at the Wehrle-Diakonissen Private Clinic on November 19 at 9.11 pm. Measuring 52 centimetres and weighing 3480 grams, the little miracle does not yet know that she is a very special baby, and not just for her parents.

"We congratulate the proud parents from the bottom of our hearts and thank them on behalf of all those who have placed their trust in us over the past three decades to accompany them through this unique experience," says Dr. Alexander Georgoulopoulos, specialist in gynaecology and obstetrics and coordinator of the Birth Competence Centre.

Changes in 30 years

Obviously, a lot has changed in the field of obstetrics over the past 30 years: The then rather technical, sterile obstetrics in tiled operating theatres has developed into a woman- and family-oriented service in a feel-good atmosphere that provides the greatest possible safety for child and mother. "Today, women are more actively involved with their ideas and wishes and decide for themselves how they want to have their child. We want to enable women to have a beautiful birth and at the same time have to deal responsibly with the complex process of childbirth," says Georgoulopoulos. "With all the options we have today: from acupuncture and homeopathy to painkillers and nitrous oxide to epidural anaesthesia (epidural anaesthesia for a painless birth) or caesarean section."

Water births, for example, were also not common in the past. Today, giving birth in water is one of the most popular ways to have a baby. "In our clinic, almost a quarter of our babies were born in water in 2023," says Dr. Georgoulopoulos. "This figure also reflects the amount of time our midwives and doctors devote to the births."

The integrative puerperium, which actively involves the father immediately after the birth, has also been common practice at the Wehrle-Diakonissen Private Hospital for years. "Of course, it takes more effort to look after a second person and guide them in dealing with the newborn," says Georgoulopoulos. "But this effort is worth it because we discharge families who have a healthy basis for their future life together."

Incentive to continue giving the best

"Every birth is an extraordinary event and for us far more than just a medical service," says Dr. Gerd Seitlinger, Medical Director of the clinic. "Our highly qualified team works day and night to make every birth as comfortable and safe as possible. Every family that places their trust in us is a confirmation of our work and an incentive for us to continue to give our best."

Individual obstetric care is appreciated
Regular patient satisfaction surveys also show how much the team's efforts are appreciated. In the evaluated areas of "Medical care", "Nursing care" and "Personal care", a consistent 9.8 out of 10 possible points are achieved. "This is great feedback for our staff, midwives and medical specialists, who put their heart and soul into the well-being of the young and old people entrusted to them every day," says Primar Seitlinger.
