Private hospitals as a pillar of European healthcare

Healthcare in Europe is facing major challenges: Staff shortages, rising demand, long waiting times and limited resources are putting pressure on many national systems. In a recent open letter, the European Association of Private Hospitals (UEHP) calls for the role of private providers to be given greater prominence in the health policy debate.

Private hospitals contribute to the stability, efficiency and innovative strength of healthcare in Europe. Around 40% of hospital beds belong to the private sector (Eurostat 2022) - a clear indication of the central role that private facilities already play today. In addition to emergency care, planned interventions and rehabilitation, they also play a role in digital transformation and the use of new technologies.

Among other things, it calls for more equal opportunities in access to funding, fair remuneration models and greater integration of private providers in healthcare policy strategies. The letter is intended to provide an impetus for a debate on the future of European healthcare.
