For more than four decades, Klinikum Malcherhof Baden has focused on the treatment of rheumatic diseases and musculoskeletal disorders. Due to demographic change and our modern lifestyle, these are more relevant than ever.
Around a quarter of Austrians suffer from inflammatory or degenerative rheumatic complaints, with the figure rising to 40 percent from the age of 55. For those affected, this means pain, reduced quality of life and mobility, frequent sick leave, sometimes permanent disabilities and often the loss of the ability to work with considerable loss of income. Rheumatic diseases are not only a burden on the individual, but also on the healthcare system. They cause the most sick days and are the second most common reason for early retirement.
The number of orthopaedic operations has also been rising continuously for decades. According to Statistics Austria, around 240,000 operations on the musculoskeletal system were performed across Austria in 1997, rising to 306,000 in 2019. After a corona-related decline, the number was again above 297,000 in 2023. There is no end in sight to this trend, making medical rehabilitation a key factor in maintaining mobility and quality of life while at the same time reducing costs for the healthcare system. This is precisely where Klinikum Malcherhof Baden comes in. The ground-breaking ceremony for the former "Rheuma Special Hospital of the SVA der gewerblichen Wirtschaft" took place in October 1975. Since its opening in 1978, the clinic, which has since been completely renovated and expanded, has offered specialized rehabilitation for people with musculoskeletal disorders. Today, around 3,000 patients are treated here as inpatients every year.
"The rehabilitation of these clinical pictures is becoming increasingly important in view of the constantly ageing population, our increasingly sedentary lifestyle and the rising number of orthopaedic operations. Specialized facilities, such as the Malcherhof Baden Clinic, are a crucial component of our healthcare provision in order to maintain mobility and quality of life while avoiding the costs of early retirement," emphasizes Dr. Alexander Biach, CEO of the SVS.
More than 40 years of experience - expertise for the future
The choice of Baden as a location was no coincidence: the spa town and UNESCO World Heritage Site has been known since Roman times for its thermal springs and the treatment of rheumatic diseases. "The focus is on people with complex systemic diseases who require highly specialized, complex therapies. This is exactly what we offer with a dedicated team of highly trained staff, so that our patients can quickly return to their everyday lives and work," explains Karin Kovar, BA MA, Operational Director of the Malcherhof.
Between 2010 and 2012, the clinic was extensively renovated and a new building was added. Today, 173 modern single rooms are available. But the focus is still on the future, because even after more than four decades, the Malcherhof remains innovative. "For example, we are working on tele-rehab programs and the connection to the electronic health record ELGA. This will enable us to provide even better support for our insured patients in future, even beyond their inpatient stay," says Kovar. At the same time, medical training therapy is being continuously developed to provide patients with even more targeted support in rebuilding strength, mobility and endurance. Modern equipment, new training methods and individually tailored programs ensure that patients are optimally prepared for everyday life and professional reintegration.
