At the health center for the self-employed, SVS policyholders with headaches can now turn to an interdisciplinary headache outpatient clinic. Dr. Inge Knödlstorfer, headache expert and head of the outpatient clinic, takes a holistic approach by combining Western medicine with traditional Chinese medicine methods.
Headaches and migraines are a huge burden for sufferers. "These patients suffer from chronic pain and have usually already tried many unsuccessful treatments," explains Dr. Inge Knödlstorfer. The general practitioner has been dealing with headaches in depth for ten years and heads the new outpatient clinic at the health center for the self-employed. Her aim is to create a holistic, individual treatment concept for every sufferer in order to help them return to a daily life that is as symptom-free as possible. The length and intensity of the therapy depend heavily on personal factors as well as the type and cause of the headache.
The best of two worlds
At the beginning of treatment, it is important to clarify the type of headache. A basic distinction is made between headaches that occur as a primary disorder (e.g. migraine, cluster or tension headaches) and those that arise as a result of other illnesses (secondary headaches). During the initial consultation, Dr. Knödlstorfer uses traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) methods in addition to modern diagnostics - e.g. assessment of the neurological status, blood findings, MRI of the skull, etc. - at the same time. In addition to pulse and tongue diagnosis, dietary and lifestyle habits, temperature, drinking habits, sleep and the mental state of the person concerned also play a role. "TCM is an experiential medicine whose strength lies in restoring the body's function," explains Dr. Knödlstorfer. In contrast, Western medicine is symptom-oriented. In order to help her patients in the best possible way, the general practitioner combines the best of both worlds.
Helping people to help themselves
Based on the medical history, the headache expert creates individual treatment concepts, which in turn combine therapeutic approaches from conventional medicine and TCM. Taking into account specialties such as neurology, psychology, physiotherapy and orthopaedics, body and ear acupuncture can also be used as established TCM methods. On the one hand, the aim is to get the existing pain under control - TCM speaks here of balancing out a specific pathology. On the other hand, pain should not arise in the first place in the future. Patients are therefore given lifestyle tips and instructions to help them maintain their restored balance. "My aim is to help people help themselves. The headache outpatient clinic should be a place where patients know: this is where I can go if I have symptoms, this is where I can get help. At the same time, I also want to give them the right tools so that their complaints don't arise in the future and they are not dependent on regular visits to the outpatient clinic," explains Dr. Knödlstorfer.
Everything under one roof for SVS policyholders
While the headache outpatient clinic offers a holistic diagnosis and treatment of primary headaches, the treatment of secondary headaches is carried out in the respective disciplines of the triggering disease. Here too, SVS-insured patients benefit at the health center for the self-employed because they can find a wide range of medical specialties under one roof. "This saves valuable time and provides relief in what is already a very stressful situation," says Managing Director Maria Lesterl. The new headache outpatient clinic is available to affected SVS insured persons with a neurological referral by appointment.
