Joint new building for Confraternity and Goldenes Kreuz: the winning project has been chosen

The winning project of the realization competition for the planned joint new building of the Confraternität and Goldenes Kreuz private clinics has been announced: the Austrian firm Baumschlager Eberle Architekten will plan the new building, in which modern medicine and sustainability go hand in hand.

A joint new building is planned for the Goldenes Kreuz and Confraternität private clinics on the site of the current Confraternität private clinic. The two successful clinics, which are currently just a few hundred meters apart, will be brought together under one roof at the Skodagasse site to form a new clinic built using sustainable construction methods. Construction of the new building with 120 beds is scheduled to start in mid-2026 and be completed in 2028.

Unanimous competition winner
A design competition was launched in spring 2024. In June, a competition jury, which also included representatives of Vienna's 8th district and the municipal authorities of the City of Vienna, unanimously declared the design by the renowned Austrian firm Baumschlager Eberle Architekten the winner. "The winning project not only impresses with its in-depth knowledge of the requirements for a modern hospital infrastructure that can meet the challenges of the future. Modern medicine and sustainability go hand in hand in this design," emphasizes Cornelia Obermeier, Managing Director of the two clinics.

Baumschlager Eberle Architekten has already successfully planned and implemented healthcare facilities in Germany and abroad. Following a negotiated procedure, the competition winner has now been commissioned with the general planning. "The winning project forms the basis for the detailed planning, so we are now gradually moving into the concrete implementation phase - also together with our employees as the future users," says Obermeier, looking forward to the next phase.

Architect Julia Wildfeuer, Managing Director of Baumschlager Eberle Architekten, outlines the key aspects: "We have carefully designed the urban layout. The aim is for the building, with all its requirements for a hospital, to blend in well with its surroundings and to make the location attractive and enhance it for future users, as well as for the city's residents."

Good for health, good for the climate
"Health-promoting architecture with plenty of natural light and sustainability issues will also play a central role in the new building," emphasizes Wildfeuer. In the winning project, special attention is paid to preserving and expanding the green outdoor space. Green roof terraces and loggias as well as elements of façade greening not only benefit the microclimate and biodiversity. They also create an outdoor space that both meets the requirements of a modern hospital and offers added value to the public. A publicly accessible garden provides even more greenery and creates a recreational oasis in the 8th district.

The energy supply will be based on energy efficiency and renewable energies, including geothermal heating and a photovoltaic system on the roof of the building.

A dialog exhibition offers all interested parties the opportunity to find out more about the winning project.

Broad range of services
The new building will bring together the existing areas of focus of Confraternität and Goldenes Kreuz under one roof. The result is a clinic that combines the highest medical and nursing standards with an ambience that in turn contributes to recovery. Patients will find a personal, service-oriented environment with a high proportion of single rooms in the new 30,000 m² building. There are plans for 120 beds on four wards and a single room ratio of 80 percent. The new building will also include six operating theatres, two endoscopy rooms, four delivery rooms and a modern surgery and day clinic center.

The new building will cover the entire medical spectrum of the two clinics, including a center for women's health and obstetrics, a focus on men's health and a wide range of surgical services. This will be supplemented by state-of-the-art diagnostics (radiology including MRI and CT, laboratory, etc.) as well as comprehensive day clinic services. An affiliated surgery center bundles the range of outpatient treatments.

"A clinic brings together many different professional groups under one roof. Our aim is also to create modern workplaces here. Our employees and the attending physicians with whom we work should be able to develop their full potential - which also benefits the patients," Managing Director Cornelia Obermeier is convinced.

Transitional phase
Medical operations will also be maintained during the planning and construction phase. To this end, the Goldenes Kreuz Private Hospital will be adapted on an interim basis until mid-2026 and additional capacity will be created, such as additional operating theaters and surgery areas. During the construction phase at the Skodagasse site (according to planning from mid-2026 to 2028), the two clinics will then provide medical services together in the Goldenes Kreuz Private Hospital building on Lazarettgasse.
